January 5th Through 9th.  The grade eight health class worked towards the Alcohol Assessment.  Each student should have five lesson outlines that highlight important information covered throughout the alcohol chapter.  The five lesson outlines are as follows;  Why Alcohol is Harmful, Short-Term Effects of Alcohol Use, Long-Term Effects of Alcohol Use, Alcohol Abuse & Alcoholism, Getting For Alcohol Abuse.  All of the information needed to study for the Alcohol Assessment is included in the five lesson outlines.  For the assessment, each student will be given a note card.  The students should put information they feel will be on the assessment onto their note card.  Students will be allowed to use their note card as a resource while taking the assessment.  Students are encouraged to study all five lesson outlines as well as the alcohol-related prezis to prepare for the assessment.  Also, any lesson outline that does not have a grade on it, should be turned in to be graded.  Any lesson outline without a grade is currently a zero.  In other news, any student that has not turned in their alcohol research prezi should do so as soon as possible.  The alcohol research prezi is a major assessment grade.  Any student that is having difficulty with their project should see me.  Thank-you for your time.

December 15th through 19th.  Students will prepare for the Alcohol Quiz.  The quiz will consist of twenty questions that will require students to demonstrate an understanding of information covered in lessons one through three.  The students will put the finishing touches on their lesson three outline, long-term effects of alcohol use,  during the beginning of the week.  The students will be given an opportunity to check the accuracy of their responses while watching the prezi review.  Students will also be provided the information needed to prepare for the quiz.  Students should use the information given to highlight parts of the lesson one, two and three outlines.  The alcohol quiz will consist of short answer questions, a matching section and true/false statements.  It should also be mentioned that the Alcohol Research Prezi should have been completed and shared to my e-mail address;  [email protected].  The original due date for the project was either December 12th or 15th depending on when each student had class.  The NoodleTools should have also been shared to Miss Marhefka.  The NoodleTools assignment required at least three internet resources.  The submission should have been done through NoodleTools.  Students should see me if they have not completed their projects and/or have questions about their Alcohol Research.

December 8th Through December 12th.  This week each eighth grade health student will be work on their Alcohol Research Prezi.  Eighth grade health students will be given questions on various topics related to alcohol to research.  Students should use the resource page provided by Miss Marhefka to research the correct information.  The resource page can be accessed through the student sharepoint page.  Students will be required to use and cite at least three sources through NoodleTools they use to create their prezi.  Early in the week, Miss Marhefka will reintroduce students to noodletools and guide them through the process of citing an internet resource.  Each student will be required to submit their citations through NoodleTools to Miss Marhefka, it will count as a daily assessment grade. Each student will also be given a project requirement sheet that will provide the questions that each student must address and answer in their finished prezi.  The Alcohol Research Prezi will count as a major assessment grade.  Additionally, students will have the opportunity to participate in the D.W.I. Goggle Activity.  The goggles simulate the affect of alcohol on their ability to move efficiently.  Students will wear two different goggles simulating day and night, in addition to different blood alcohol content levels.  Students will be asked to write a one paragraph response describing the difference they experienced.

December 1st through 5th.  Grade Eight Health continues to explore the alcohol chapter.  The next lesson in the alcohol chapter is entitled, "Short-Term Effects of Alcohol Use".  It is important for the students to understand that alcohol negatively impacts an individual's ability to respond quickly and appropriately to situations.  We will also define important terms related to alcohol such as intoxication and blood alcohol content. We also explore how alcohol affects each individual differently.  We will identify six different factors that determine the effect that alcohol has on an individual.  We will also identify the three different categories of alcoholic beverages and their varying alcohol content.  Lastly, we will discuss how alcohol consumption can negatively impact our ability to utilize nutrients.  This is often overlooked by most. Students will also be given an opportunity to present their, "All About Me" Prezi to their classmates.  If a student has not, they need to understand that they have a zero for a minor assessment grade.  Any student that is having a problem sharing their prezi, they should see me as soon as possible. Finally, we will have a alcohol system quiz in the near future.  It will consist of twenty questions (short answer and matching).  Stay tuned for details.

November 24th - 26th.  Grade Eight Health will transition into their first major topic, Alcohol.  We will begin to explore the Alcohol Chapter.  First, we will look at lesson one and we will explore why alcohol is harmful.  Following lesson one, it will be important for each student to understand how alcohol is made, what type of alcohol is in beverages and be able to identify the drug classification of alcohol.  We will also take a look at why teens choose to drink, identify reasons not to drink and list alternatives to drinking alcohol.  Upon completion of the lesson one outline, the students will view the lesson one review prezi to check their responses.  The lesson one outline will be collected and count as a daily assessment grade.  As we move through the alcohol chapter ask yourself these questions: 1.  What is reaction time? 2.  How does alcohol impact an individual's reaction time? Each grade eight health student will present their prezi to the class.  Each student's presentation will provide their classmates with an opportuntiy to get to know them better.  It will also provide the presenter with the opportunity to feel good about talking about themselves, identifying their strengths and interests.  The prezi and presentation will be a minor assessment grade.  Happy Thanksgiving.

November 17th - 21st Grade Eight Health begins with the students exploring the health triangle, specifically mental/emotional health.  As the week comes to an end, each student should be finishing their first health project, "All About Me' Prezi.  The project allowed each student to become familiar with how to design a prezi and become more comfortable expressing their belief in their unique interests.   The students are able to work on their prezi at home on the internet.  The students should have a login and password for their free prezi account.  The students were encouraged to use their school e-mail account.  That e-mail is;  first name.last [email protected].  If students need an example of how to organize their prezi, they can view my example.  It is located in the seventh grade health tab on my website.   By November 21st, each student should have handed in the following assignments; 1.  Understanding Your Health Outline, Daily Assessment, 2.  Mental/Emotional Health Outline, Daily Assessment, 3.  Folder & Notebook Check, Daily Assessment, 4.  All About Me Prezi Project, Minor Assessment. Our next topic will be Alcohol.  Alcohol is explored in-depth in chapter twelve of the health textbook.  As we transitions to the topic of Alcohol, ask yourself these questions;  Why is Alcohol is Harmful? What is the drug classification of alcohol? What type of alcohol is in beverages? "Failure to prepare is preparing to fail."
