December 1st Through 5th.  The strength & conditioning block will continue by giving each student the opportunity to practice the four major movements.  The primary focus of the first block was to allow each student to learn how to move properly while performing the air squat, the deadlift, the strict press and the hand release push-up.  As the S & C, block one concludes each student will get more repetitions at each of the four movements.  Students that demonstrate the ability to move correctly will be given the opportunity to challenge themselves with additional resistance.   We will also continue to incorporate exercises that focus on the development of our cardiovascular fitness level.  We will work on our ability to jump rope throughout the week.  The skill of jump rope can be scaled to the ability level of each student.  It is important to have the right size jump rope.  When selecting a jump rope, the athlete should step on the middle of the jump rope.  The end of the handles should come up to the athlete's chest level.  This will ensure that the jump rope is long enough for the athlete to use.   The Strength & Conditioning Assessment for block one will be on December 8th or 9th, depending on when each student has physical education class.  The assessment will require each student to provide twenty responses.  The review prezi is located on my website under the physical education tab.  It is entitled, Strength & Conditioning.  It can be viewed as many times as needed.

December 1st through 5th.  Grade Eight Health continues to explore the alcohol chapter.  The next lesson in the alcohol chapter is entitled, "Short-Term Effects of Alcohol Use".  It is important for the students to understand that alcohol negatively impacts an individual's ability to respond quickly and appropriately to situations.  We will also define important terms related to alcohol such as intoxication and blood alcohol content. We also explore how alcohol affects each individual differently.  We will identify six different factors that determine the effect that alcohol has on an individual.  We will also identify the three different categories of alcoholic beverages and their varying alcohol content.  Lastly, we will discuss how alcohol consumption can negatively impact our ability to utilize nutrients.  This is often overlooked by most. Students will also be given an opportunity to present their, "All About Me" Prezi to their classmates.  If a student has not, they need to understand that they have a zero for a minor assessment grade.  Any student that is having a problem sharing their prezi, they should see me as soon as possible. Finally, we will have a alcohol system quiz in the near future.  It will consist of twenty questions (short answer and matching).  Stay tuned for details.

December 1st through 5th.  Grade Seven Health continues to explore the body systems chapter.  The next body system up is the Muscular System.  It is important for the students to understand that the body systems work together, especially the skeletal and the muscular system.  The skeletal system and the muscular system work together to allow the body to bend, run, walk, lift, jump and carry.   We will define the muscular system and focus on the three major functions of the muscular system.  In addition to idenfying the three different types of muscules, the difference between contraction and extension.  The muscular system will conclude with us touching on disorders of the muscular system and how to take care of the muscular system.   Students will also be given an opportunity to present their, "All About Me" Prezi to their classmates.  If a student has not, they need to understand that they have a zero for a minor assessment grade.  Any student that is having a problem sharing their prezi, they should see me as soon as possible. Finally, we will have a skeletal system quiz in the near future.  It will consist of twenty-four questions (short answer and matching).  Stay tuned for details.

This week, the Strength & Conditioning sessions will  introduce the deadlift and the strict press.  It is important for everyone to learn how to perform these movements correctly.   The points to remember when performing the deadlift are as follows; 1.  The athlete should hide the knots in their shoelaces with the bar in the set-up, 2.  The athlete should stay weighted in their heels when performing the lift, 3.  The athlete should keep the bar against their legs and push their hips back when returning the weight to the ground. The points to remember when performing the strict press are as follows; 1.  The athlete should be weighted in their heels with their feet directly underneath their shoulders in the set-up, 2.  The athlete should have their hands outside their shoulders, elbows down and slightly in front of the bar, 3.  The athlete should press the bar overhead and cover their ears with their shoulders, 4.  The athlete should press the bar straight up, their head should move slightly back to accomodate the bar. The squat and push-ups will also continue to incorporated into the activities to allow each athlete to work on improving their ability to move, their overall strength and endurance.  The goal is to be better than yesterday.

November 24th - 26th.  Grade Seven Health will transition into their first major topic, the body systems.  We will begin by exploring the skeletal system.  Following lesson one, it will be important for each student to understand what the skeletal system is, what the skeletal system allows an individual to do and what four important functions the skeletal system performs.  We will also take a look at the different types of joints and connective tissues.  Upon completion of the lesson one outline, the students will view the lesson one review prezi to check their responses.  The lesson one outline will be collected and count as a daily assessment grade.  As we complete the skeleton system outline, we should attempt to answer the following question; 1.  What other systems of the human body does the skeletal system cooperate with to perform important functions? Each grade seven health student will present their prezi to the class.  Each student's presentation will provide their classmates with an opportuntiy to get to know them better.  It will also provide the presenter with the opportunity to feel good about talking about themselves, identifying their strengths and interests.  The prezi and presentation will be a minor assessment grade.  Happy Thanksgiving.
